These are the words I’ve not only heard hundreds of times, but uttered myself! You and I have both thought of insurance as one of those necessary evils! I remember despising the fact that I would probably never have to use it. And to make matters worse, I never really knew what kind of coverage I had – only that I had a policy.
Can you imagine waking up to your wife screaming in the dead of night? Not knowing what to think, you leap out of bed and dart down the hallway. You track the screaming to the stairwell of your basement. You find her crying at the bottom of the stairs and pointing to a watery mess!
Did you know your typical homeowner’s insurance policy does not offer coverage for any of the resulting damages in this particular instance!?!
This is exactly what happened to me and my family on February 28, 2011 at 4:37 a.m. – over $10,000 in damage, and our basement isn’t even finished!
I’ve spoken with dozens of homeowners who had no idea that their policy provided them with NO COVERAGE for instances where water would overflow from their sump pit in the basement, or come up through a drain in the floor. In our case, the power went out and tripped the breakers, so even though we had electrical sump pumps they won’t work if there’s no juice!
Even if you don’t have a basement there’s still the risk of water (or worse yet, sewage!) coming up through a clogged drain. Ask anyone who’s had to deal with this kind of a mess, it’s not fun and it’s not cheap to clean up or repair. We maxed out our $10,000 limit in coverage in an unfinished basement. What would’ve happened if it were a finished basement?
My Passion Is Protecting You
That’s one of the reasons I love what I do – it may sound cliché, but I offer peace of mind. I know what it’s like to feel as though you’re paying for something you may never even use, but I’ve found that when the time comes, and you really do need to use it, you want to make sure you’ve got the right protection to begin with! And this is just one example above, there are dozens of other areas that a basic homeowner’s policy doesn’t offer coverage for!
When I joined my family’s insurance agencies in 2009, I didn’t set out to sell insurance. First of all, I’m not a good salesman. I really didn’t like the way I’d been treated in the past by salespeople – I honestly kind of viewed them like trained killers who knew all of the psychological tactics that would trick me into buying from them.
When’s The Last Time Your Agent Called To Review Your Policies With You?
With that kind of perspective, I decided that I would look to help fix problems for members of my community, in regards to their insurance policies, only if we could agree there were problems to be fixed – and assuming I could fix them within their budget. To me it seemed like the most honest and genuine approach to protecting you and your family.
I call it a Protection Review appointment where…
- We learn more about each other and discuss your current insurance experience.
- We review your protection plans together.
- We only take action if we both agree that it would be worth our time.
My Protection Review appointment has been a huge success with busy individuals and families who view time as their most important asset. Let’s face it, as a father of three sons I know how busy nights are and the last thing you want to do is spend an entire evening talking about insurance.
The appointment can be held day or night at your home, or in my office, and should only last about 20 minutes. If it looks like you’re well-taken care of and happy with everything, then I’m going to suggest you stay where you’re at. There’s no sense in us fixing what isn’t broke!
What Would You Do If You Found Out You Had No Coverage After a Tragic Accident?
But when I first started meeting and reviewing policies with folks I was shocked to discover that nearly 50% of homeowners were underinsured or had no coverage for areas that they told me were important! Now, is that a perfect statistic? Of course not. But in my experience, and accounting for the hundreds of individuals I’ve sat down with over the past few years, nearly 1 in every 2 was in worse shape than they thought.
When it comes to insurance, and protecting your family and possessions, it’s typically the little changes in coverage that make all the difference.
Paying premiums for your insurance policy is an investment because your shielding against an eventual loss. But I also feel your investing in your agent too. I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I don’t feel that being a “good” agent is good enough, not when it comes to protecting you and your family.
We had been with our previous insurance company for over 10 years…a company that had provided complete coverage for all of our needs. Matt was able to prepare an insurance protection package that met our needs and exceeded our expectations!”
− Kim (Lima, Ohio)
So in parting, I want to repeat the first 10 words that I said at the very beginning. I hate paying premiums for something I never even use.
- But what happens when you do need to use it?
- Are you sleeping like a baby at night, in complete confidence of your protection plan?
Are you getting the value you deserve for every dollar you are investing in your insurance experience?
If you would like to know if you are in fact well-protected, or if you aren’t happy with your current insurance experience, then I’d recommend we meet and review your policies together. If all looks good and there aren’t any problems to be fixed, then I’m not going to waste your time.
